Catching Up

July 31, 2010

It seems I never posted from last week’s trip.  Granted, it was just a handful of cemeteries but interesting all the same.  One of the cemeteries visited was the Shelburne Road Cemetery in South Burlington.  I’m not sure how many people have ever noticed this cemetery but it’s next to Freedom Nissan (the new location), tucked back in the trees.  Amazingly, this  is still an active cemetery although it also holds some much older stones as well.

The two names for the weekend were Tirzah and Lodoiska.

St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Winooski

So only a handful of cemeteries this weekend but lots of pictures.  My favorite of the weekend was St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Winooski.  Many of the stones there are in French.  The other interesting side trip was to two Jewish cemeteries in South Burlington.  I love the tradition of leaving stones to mark the visiting living remembering those gone.

Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington. All of the small stones in this section are numbered, most with just a number and no name. From what I can tell they are all children. Where I was standing was #245.

Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington. Another section of children, this one dedicated to children who died in "The House for Destitute Children".

Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington. Yet another small section of children, this one marked with a small set of empty shoes.

St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Winooski. Unfortunately children seemed the theme this weekend. This small grouping in the middle of a row of stones were all children.
